Drawing on international and thematic case studies, 'The Critical Analysis of Religious Diversity' asks its readers to pay attention to the assumptions and processes by which scholars, religious practitioners and states construct religious diversity. The study has three foci: theoretical and methodological issues; religious diversity in non-Western contexts; and religious diversity in social contexts. Together, these trans-contextual studies are utilised to develop a critical analysis exploring how agency, power and language construct understandings of religious diversity. As a result, the book argues that reflexive scholarship needs to consider that the dynamics of diversification and homogenisation are fundamental to understanding social and religious life, that religious diversity is a Western concept, and that definitions of ?religious diversity? are often entangled by and within dynamic empirical realities.

Cet ouvrage est issu d’un Séminaire (EHESS/EPHE) tenu autour d’une histoire des représentations, et des phénomènes d’héritage (à la fois symbolique et patrimonial), de la Terre sainte dans les trois monothéismes. Il réunit jeunes chercheurs et chercheurs confirmés, anthropologues et historiens, qui travaillent ensemble depuis plusieurs années. Pratiquant l’enquête de terrain de longue durée et l’usage des archives, tous ont pu confronter leurs approches, méthodes et lectures, ce qui a contribué à forger des outils de réflexion communs par-delà la diversité des aires culturelles. L’ouvrage présente des études de cas approfondies en Palestine, en Israël et en Jordanie, en contextes chrétien et musulman, mais aussi samaritain. D’autres contributions ont quitté cet espace circonscrit pour explorer des faits de translation des Lieux saints, chez les moines orthodoxes du mont Athos, dans une église russe orthodoxe construite à Paris en 1931, comme dans le décor italien de L’évangile selon Saint Matthieu de Pasolini. C’est ainsi qu’est notamment questionnée la pertinence de la notion de transfert de sacralité dans l’analyse des processus de patrimonialisation de sites religieux.
